Elemental attack builds in Path of Exile 2 often reach a point where adding more raw weapon damage is less valuable than improving how much damage actually reaches the target. That is where the Soul Core of Topotante deserves attention, especially after patch 0.5.5 increased its Martial Weapon effect from 15% to 25% Elemental Resistance Penetration. If you are deciding how to spend Path of Exile 2 Currency, the important question is not whether Topotante looks impressive on paper, but whether your weapon consistently deals elemental hit damage against resistant enemies.

What the 0.5.5 Change Really Does

When Topotante is socketed into a Martial Weapon, attacks with that weapon penetrate 25% of the enemy's Elemental Resistance. Penetration is applied to the target's resistance calculation, so it improves the portion of your existing elemental damage that gets through. It does not simply add another elemental damage line to the weapon.

That distinction matters most when your attack already has a strong elemental component. A small physical weapon upgrade may show a larger number in a character panel, yet perform worse against an enemy with meaningful resistance. Topotante becomes more attractive as the target becomes harder to damage through resistance.

Which Builds Should Consider It?

Topotante is a focused choice rather than a universal upgrade. It is best suited to weapons whose attacks already convert physical damage into an element or gain substantial elemental damage from other parts of the build.

A mostly physical weapon has less reason to use Topotante. In that case, the penetration affects only a limited part of the attack, so a more direct damage option may provide a better result.

When It Beats a Conventional Damage Core

The practical test is simple: compare Topotante with your usual damage Soul Core on the same weapon, then use both against enemies with noticeable elemental resistance. Testing on weak campaign targets can hide the difference because those enemies may not pressure your resistance penetration in the first place.

Topotante tends to make more sense for boss-focused or late-game setups than for early progression. During the campaign, a raw weapon improvement can be easier to feel, especially if your elemental damage is still modest. Later, when the attack is already well established, penetration can improve real damage more efficiently than another small increase to the weapon's displayed value.

The Boots Option and Its Limitation

Topotante also offers a defensive modifier when socketed into Boots: 25% reduced effect of Non-Damaging Ailments. This gives the Soul Core a separate use outside the weapon slot and can reduce the impact of effects such as Chill.

That defensive benefit should be treated as useful support, not the main reason to force Topotante into a build. The weapon effect is the central attraction for elemental attackers, while the Boots effect matters when your equipment plan has room for it and your character regularly feels the pressure of non-damaging ailments.

For most players, the sensible approach is to test Topotante rather than assume it is automatically best. Check how much of your attack is elemental, compare it against a familiar damage core on resistant targets, and consider the Boots alternative if your defenses need help. Keep some POE 2 Exalted Orbs available for the rest of the setup, but do not chase Topotante unless its penetration improves the damage your build actually deals.
